Word from the CHAIRMAN.

Kenya, the Flower of Equator. The economy of Africa is rising with incredible speed. Both the cheap quality products and the high luxury products are sold out immediately. The time we have to prepare for the second and third industries to cater for 2,000 million Africans has arrived. Learning Africa is the first prerequisite for the upcoming trend of Africa. Africa indeed has lots of good opportunities. Yet, in Africa you might need to spend 1–3 years to experience and learn. It is not the easiest continent for foreigners. An African tree to its roots takes 5 years. Africa will require quite some time before anything grows. It would be impossible to win something while making profits whenever we are judged by our two Western brothers and Korean neighbors. Africa remains a black hole in the creation of profit when it comes to confidence in such a huge, attractive region. In the end now, Africa also holds high potential in making another economic miracle after China in the near future. We all need to try our best to dig out the last black pearl in Africa.

CHAIRMAN INTERVIEW

“We catch up with The Chairman of SANA Industries to answer some few questions.”

Q: What inspired you to start SANA Industries?

Ans: Before I started SANA industries, hair products and hair additions were made in Korea and a lot of it was being imported. I realised that it added value to a woman's beauty particularly their hair, also to be part of a society builder other than a complainer.

Q: Did you have any background on women hair before entering this industry?

Ans: No, I did not have any background in hair manufacturing industry. I just saw it as an opportunity to start a business. My major in management I using my managerial skills. I could get people who knew much about hair and manage them properly. My best attribute is getting the best out of people.

Q: Did you start the company SANA in Kenya or you had already started somewhere else?

Ans: The company originally started in Kenya in 1989. It was the first African business by a South Korean. Currently, the company has spread out through out East Africa.

Q: Did you find it easy setting up the main factory in Kenya as compared to other African companies?

Ans: Kenya, the Flower of the Equator. The economy of Africa is rising with the incredible speed. Both the cheap quality products and the expensive luxury products are sold out immediately.Kenya has many educated and hardworking people therefore, it is easier to live here. Likewise, Kenya has many Kenyans very well educated compared to other African countries. Kenya people are also very hard working and friendly. The welcome I received here in Kenya was very encouraging. The climatic conditions in Kenya are favourable. The huge difference in customs and culture would require quite some time to understand. It would be impossible to live with them while making profits when we only judge from our knowledge.

Q: Did there exist any other competitors or you were the first in Kenya in the hair industry business?

Ans: I had so many competitors. Although many of my competitors were selling there was no one manufacturing in Kenya for hair products to make. However, SANA built its first factories and started manufacturing its products locally.

Q: Did there exist any other competitors or you were the first in Kenya in the hair industry business?

Ans: I had so many competitors. Although many of my competitors were selling there was no one manufacturing in Kenya for hair products to make. However, SANA built its first factories and started manufacturing its products locally.

Q: What problems did you face during the factory in Kenya?

Ans: Starting up a company in Kenya was rather challenging because we had so many competitors all eager to get their share in the hair industry. Finding the perfect location to set up a factory in Kenya was rather not easy. I had to do alot of research to get the perfect location. There were also the infrastructural instabilities that faced Kenya at that time was particularly not good for business. However, I saw nothing stopping me and achieved without challenges, commitment and hardwork.

Q: Where did you find yourself among your competitors?

Ans: I was the best in comparison to my competitors. I held an advantage over them because I had started establishing that factory based in Kenya. Most of my competitors were not well established companies as they were importing their products to Kenya. That is rather very expensive.

Q: What are challenges the company facing right now?

Ans: Some of the challenges the company is facing right now are the same challenges every company around the world is facing. One major challenge the company is facing is the infrastructural instabilities. For example, during the electioneering period, the economy of the country is affected thus people are reluctant on spending.

Q: How does the future look for SANA Industries?

Ans: The future looks bright for Kenya but. We will have to continue with our vision of transforming African hair culture. We are committed to empower and educate our employees. We are striving to create a stable and honest workplace that they deserve. The company has also embarked on the education of our employees by starting a beauty college and a beauty salon and also fostering a Taekwondo team, a traditional Korean martial art. We will also establish educational institutions that will focus on the technical and professional beauty education and provide them with a good educational environment.

Q: Any advice to young people looking forward to start a business?

Ans: I would advise the young people to start planning for there future early. They have to be always the best at what they do. Pride is always important. You must have consistency and patience. When opportunity comes, make sure you grab it.

Q: What is your secret to success?

Ans: The first time I started the company, I failed so many times. I never gave up, I kept on studying and researching. I think my secret is consistency, knowing what I want and going for it. My best attribute is getting the best out of people.
